Five Signs Your Test Equipment Needs Calibration or Inspection

Electricians, plumbers and heating engineers make decisions based on measurements. If a tester or analyser is not performing as expected, an apparently precise reading can create false confidence.
Calibration compares an instrument’s performance with traceable reference equipment and records the results. Routine visual checks and functional checks matter too. Here are five signs that your equipment deserves attention.
1. Readings are inconsistent
If the same stable input produces results that wander, shift or do not repeat as expected, stop and investigate. Inconsistent readings can have several causes, including damaged leads, poor connections, a low battery or a problem with the instrument itself.
Do not assume calibration is the only answer. Check the complete measurement setup and follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance.
2. The instrument has been dropped, knocked or overloaded
A tester can look fine after an impact and still have suffered internal damage. The same applies after an electrical overload or use outside of its specified range.
Quarantine equipment if its condition or performance is in doubt. Record what happened and arrange inspection, repair or calibration as appropriate before putting it back into service.
3. Leads, probes, fuses or batteries show damage
The instrument is only one part of the measurement system. Check leads and probes for damaged insulation, ware and tear, loose connections and worn tips. Confirm that the correct fuse and battery types are fitted and the batteries are full.
Never treat a calibration certificate as a substitute for a pre-use inspection.
4. The calibration date is approaching or has passed
Check the instrument label and your equipment records before the due date becomes an urgent site problem. Planning ahead reduces avoidable downtime and makes it easier to group instruments for collection.
There is no universal interval for every instrument and every user. Set the interval using applicable requirements, manufacturer recommendations, how often and where the equipment is used, its stability history and your own quality procedures. Its is recommended that calibration is carried out on a yearly bases.
5. You cannot demonstrate confidence in the reading
Sometimes there is no obvious fault — but you cannot verify the instrument’s accuracy or traceability.
That uncertainty is itself a reason to pause, especially where the result affects safety, compliance or certification.
If you have access to another instrument, use it to compare.
